2022 Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe

When Yusaku Maezawa decided to commission his very own “land jet,” it was only natural that Rolls-Royce and Hermès would answer the call. Their teams in Goodwood and Paris worked together to build an utterly singular Rolls-Royce Phantom with style and class befitting the vehicle’s new owner: a billionaire entrepreneur and art collector who owns work by Cy Twombly, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Bruce Nauman, along with many others. With the stunning, fully Bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe, Rolls-Royce and Hermès have created a crown jewel that will feel right at home in this collection.

Up Close with the Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe

Every inch of this one-of-a-kind motorcar has received hands-on attention from two of the world’s foremost titans of design, and try as we might, no amount of description can do it true justice. Even so, we can’t resist the opportunity to explore some of our favorite details with interested readers.

Whether you’re a designer looking for inspiration or you’re getting ready to commission a Rolls-Royce of your own, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe is guaranteed to ignite your passions:

  1. The exterior color scheme—a deep, dark green paired with a luxurious cream underlining—was inspired by antique Japanese Oribe stoneware pottery. The latter is known for its unique, expressive glazes and striking asymmetrical forms. Maezawa-san—himself an important collector of Oribe stoneware—has also been entitled to use the same exterior paint for his private jet.
  2. The interior of the Phantom Oribe features reclining rear seats covered in sumptuous Hermès Enea Green leather, along with fine-grain canvas inserts. Open Pore Royal Walnut veneers have been applied to the doors, center consoles, and rear picnic table, creating a singular, unified look. Even this model’s speaker frets are carved directly into the wood. The stitching and edge painting reflect the Equestrian heritage of Hermès, and a well-trained eye will detect the techniques once employed by master saddlers.
  3. Pierre Péron, who has worked with Hermès on many of the fashion house’s most iconic scarves, was also brought in to work on the Phantom Oribe’s iconic dash inlay. The latter features dot-drawn mirrored horses in the artist’s distinct flat and modern style. (You might recognize similar forms in the artist’s earlier Quadrige II design.) The horses’ light and remarkably subtle coloring unifies the wood inlay with the creamy leather of the dash.

What else should you know about the Rolls-Royce Phantom Oribe? Only that these unique features and accouterments are built upon the already-stunning Phantom Extended Wheelbase platform. The most recent Phantom offers interior features and luxuries that no modern saloon car can match, and with its long wheelbase, it’s comfortable enough to serve as anyone’s home-away-from-home.
