Rolls-Royce Hood Ornament: The Spirit of Ecstasy

No matter if you’re just becoming a Rolls-Royce owner or you’ve been a long-time owner, you’re likely familiar with the Rolls-Royce logo: the Spirit of Ecstasy. If you’re unfamiliar, this is the Rolls-Royce hood ornament name. This hood ornament depicts a woman in a flowy gown leaning forward into the wind.

The Rolls-Royce hood ornament name also has been known to be called ‘the flying lady.’ However, her grace is based on more than just the aesthetics. This famous Rolls-Royce hood ornament embodies all that a Rolls-Royce model is.

Rolls-Royce Spirit

Origins of the Rolls-Royce Symbol

In 1909, sculptor Charles Sykes created this automotive icon out of Eleanor Thornton’s likeness. By 1911, this icon was included on each and every Rolls-Royce model in production. And like each Rolls-Royce model, the Spirit of Ecstasy broke the cultural norms.

At the time, the cultural standards of London promoted women as passive and Eleanor Thronton’s automotive enthusiasm and her work with the motoring magazine Car Illustrated, spurned expectations of her era and inspired the Spirit of Ecstasy.
